Ptarmigan Dynamics is a Canadian aerospace company founded in 2026 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. We develop battery packs and heated charging cases that keep drones flying, and charging, in the cold.
We started with a simple observation. Most small drones are designed for a mild afternoon. Take them to −30 °C and the battery gives up first: capacity falls, internal resistance climbs, flight time drops well below the rated figure, and a cold pack has to be warmed before it can be charged again. The people who most need drones in the north, from search and rescue and defence to pipeline monitoring and remote research stations, are exactly the people the current market leaves short.
So we work from the battery outward. Our packs are built on high energy density cells and designed to fly at −30 °C, and our heated case makes charging in the field practical. We fly them on our own aircraft, and work with drone makers to fit them to theirs.
We are a small team. Final assembly happens here in Kitchener-Waterloo, and the people you talk to are the engineers who design the packs.
The willow ptarmigan (taar · muh · gn) is a grouse that lives year-round in the Canadian Arctic. It turns pure white in winter, roosts under the snow to stay warm, and does not migrate. It seemed like the right namesake for equipment that is supposed to stay and work when everything else has left.
